Defensive Positioning
Where you stand matters more than how fast you are. Smart positioning turns routine plays into easy outs.
Basic positioning by situation
| Situation | Infield | Outfield |
|---|---|---|
| No one on, normal depth | Standard depth, even spacing | Normal depth, shade based on hitter |
| Runner on 1st, less than 2 outs | Double play depth (closer to 2B) | Normal |
| Runner on 3rd, less than 2 outs | Infield in (on the grass) to cut off the run | Ready to charge on a short fly |
| Two outs | Normal depth — just get the easy out | Play deeper — nothing over your head |
| Protecting a lead late | No-doubles defense — deep, protect gaps | Deep, protect the gaps |
Shifts by hitter type
| Hitter Type | Adjustment |
|---|---|
| Pull hitter (righty pulls left) | Shift SS and 3B toward the left side |
| Opposite-field hitter | Stay honest, shade slightly the other way |
| Fast runner at the plate | Infield plays a step closer |
| Weak hitter / bunter | Infield creeps in, corners charge on contact |
The best defensive teams don't make spectacular plays — they don't need to. They're in the right spot before the ball is hit, so every play looks routine.
