Infield Double Play Drill
The double play is one of the most exciting plays in baseball. It requires teamwork, timing, and clean footwork.
The basic 6-4-3
| Step | Who | Action |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Shortstop (6) | Fields the ground ball cleanly |
| 2 | Shortstop (6) | Makes a chest-high feed to second base |
| 3 | Second baseman (4) | Catches the feed while touching second base |
| 4 | Second baseman (4) | Pivots and throws to first base |
| 5 | First baseman (3) | Stretches to catch the throw — two outs |
Practice routine (10 min)
| Time | Drill |
|---|---|
| 3 min | Feed drill — shortstop rolls to second baseman at the bag. Practice the underhand feed. |
| 3 min | Full 6-4-3 — roll ground balls to shortstop, full double play. |
| 2 min | 4-6-3 — ground balls to second baseman, feed to short covering second, relay to first. |
| 2 min | 1-6-3 or 1-4-3 — pitcher fields a comebacker and starts the double play. |
Footwork at second base is everything. The player receiving the feed needs to touch the bag, clear the sliding runner, and make an accurate throw — all in under 2 seconds.
